Balikpapan: Indonesia’s New Capital?
In 2019, the Indonesian government announced radical plans to move the capital city of Indonesia from its current location of Jakartato a new location in the vicinity of Balikpapan city. Feasibility studies and planning are still at an early stage so there is still little clarity about exactly where the capital will be located and how the infrastructure of Balikpapan and Kalimantan in general will be able to cope.
Balikpapan Is Not Bali!
Please note that Balikpapan Airport is not located in Bali, Indonesia. Sometimes travel agents get confused and think Balikpapan is Bali’s airport. Bali Airport is officially known as Denpasar Airport. The airport code for Balikpapan Airport is BPN; the airport code for Denpasar Airport in Bali is DPS. Bali Airport and Balikpapan Airport are in different areas of Indonesia hundreds of miles apart. Make sure you book flights to the right airport!
