Kalimantan has some great scuba diving which still remains relatively undiscovered. Only a few liveaboards and dive resorts exist in the region.
Tambora liveaboard in Kalimantan
Just as Malaysian Borneo has the famous scuba diving islands of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai scattered off the island’s north coast, so Kalimantan has its own excellent diving island on the east coast of Indonesian Borneo.
Derawan, Sangalaki and Maratua islands each have their own resorts which are popular dive destinations, while the Tambora liveaboard visits each year to explore the best dive sites and maximise diving time in the area.
Manta ray in the shallows at Sangalaki
Highlights include the manta rays at Sangalaki, the seasonal spawning release of the jawfish at Derawan and the stingless jellyfish lake at Kakaban.
- Tambora liveaboard has Kalimantan dive trips scheduled for June 2020 and July 2020. Follow the links for more info on the boat and their Kalimantan dive itinerary.
- Sangalaki resort is the only resort on Sangalaki island and so perfectly placed to dive the surrounding waters which is home for many manta rays
- Pratasaba Resort on Maratua island is a well-established dive resort with consistently good reviews. There are several other guesthouses on Maratua atoll too.
- Derawan Dive Lodge and Borneo Diving are both based on Derawan island
