Samboja Lodge is about an hour’s drive from Balikpapan Airport, and it certainly feels like leaving the city behind and entering the rainforest. The lodge sits on over 2000 hectares of land around it which provides a protected habitat for scores of different species. Orangutangs and sun bears both have rehabilitation centres here. The lodge is very much getting back to nature – no internet, no TV – and make sure you plan your packing list for maximum comfort.
